Calculate rack and pinion: important definitions. To make it clear we give you some important definitions: Tangential force or feed force. This is the force [in N] needed to deliver the linear movement profile. Torque. This is what the pinion sees and is simply tangential force * arm (radius pinion) [in Nm]. In this case F 2T = 2 * T 2B / d.

When a rack and pinion system is connected to a power steering system, the design changes slightly. A cylinder with a piston in the middle is placed in the rack. There is fluid on both sides of the piston. When pressure is placed on the fluid on one side of the piston, it forces the piston to move, which turns the rack and assists with steering.
A gear rack has straight teeth cut into one surface of a square or round section of rod and operates with a pinion, which is a small cylindrical gear meshing with the gear rack. Generally, gear rack and pinion are collectively called "rack and pinion". There are many ways to use gears.
Begin the installation by assembling the proper adapters into the pump and rack & pinion. The pressure port in the rack is the 1/2-20 port. The kit comes with 90o hose ends. Work out your hose routing and decide where to use each hose end (extra hose ends and hose are available). The diagram shows the general routing of a power steering system.
The Rack and Pinion system is pictured below in diagram ST1. In a rack and pinion system, there is a flat gear (the "Rack") shown in yellow. Attached to the ends of the rack are rod-ends which connect to the steering links. Diagram ST1. Rack and pinion steering system. The steering links connect to wheel uprights/knuckles.
